Every month, I receive the Previews catalog in anticipation of something new and exciting in the world of comics. Some months, I am sorely disappointed. At first glance, this seemed to be one of those months. Digging deeper and taking another look through hundreds of pages, I found a few things that piqued my interest. Other than the usual titles, this month has me looking at a few villains.
Coming soon — February 2017 — to a comic shop near you…
Just when you thought everyone had been reborn, DC Comics adds a few more titles to the Rebirth banner. Justice League of America and Batwoman finally get one-shot rebirth titles. The timing makes sense for JLA, since they are about to discover the Suicide Squad in a short 6 issue run. (Justice League vs Suicide Squad #1 goes on sale Dec 21st.) No doubt that will shake things up a bit. Although, the Suicide Squad had their rebirth back in August…
Batwoman: Rebirth is something I will pick up. It may be wishful thinking, but here’s hoping that she is reborn to the time when she was amazing. (Batwoman by J.H. Williams III is a favourite part of our hoard.) Batwoman is getting a new creative team with Rebirth. Fingers-crossed.
Back in the summer, Dragon was hoarding just about every Rebirth one-shot title that came along (except Green Lantern). One of the surprises was Deathstroke. It was outside the usual realm of purchases, but turned out to be quite good. Apparently villains have interesting lives and backstories when they aren’t killing everyone. Now that the trade is being printed, Deathstroke Vol.1: The Professional is going to be added to the comic stash.
If you were waiting for trade paperbacks for someone’s Rebirth Volume 1, this month also includes: Batgirl, Cyborg, Harley Quinn, The Hellblazer, Suicide Squad, and Titans. Since the whole Rebirth thing is related to Wally West, Titans Vol.1: The Return of Wally West is one I’ll pick up.
After a second, third, or maybe fourth look through the Previews, I found a few titles that I might try on for size. Astro City (Vertigo) is a book I’ve never read. This month, issue #43, the story is about a long-forgotten villain making a dramatic return. Or, perhaps not.
Continuing the villainous theme, Wilson Fisk is getting an ongoing series with Kingpin #1 (Marvel Comics). Apparently, he wants to improve his image and become involved in legitimate business. His portrayal in the Daredevil Netflix series was amazing. Maybe this comic will be too.
Marvel picks continue to be Deadpool, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Spider-Man/Deadpool. This month is the last of The Clone Conspiracy and it will be interesting to see where Peter Parker ends up.
In the DC world beyond everything Rebirth, it’s The Kamandi Challenge #2 and The Odyssey of the Amazons #2. This is the awkward month: still waiting to get the first issue of a title, not knowing if it is any good, and buying more in advance anyway.
The only book on my list from Image Comics is Descender #19. Kind of surprising, considering how many good titles come out from them.
